In the heart of the Southern Alps of New Zealand you will find Arthur's Pass National Park. It is situated on a historical road between Canterbury on the east and the wild West Coast. Winding in places it is one of the country's most scenic routes. High mountains with large scree slopes feature along with wide braided rivers and steep gorges.
Arthur's Pass village lies in the centre of the park 154 kilometres
from the city of Christchurch in the east (2 hours drive) and 100 kilometres
from Greymouth in the west (1½ hour's drive).
Travel by car or enjoy a romantic train journey on the 'TranzAlpine' (rated one of the six most beautiful train journeys in the world) through numerous tunnels, across viaducts, past remote river gorges and over high mountain passes to the rainforests of the national park - 737m above sea level. Arthur's Pass is an idyllic location for wedding photograph's boasting rainforest, mountains, waterfalls and rivers.
As Arthur’s Pass is in a mountainous area there is a mountain
climate with a lot of rain, but the place is beautiful in all weathers.
The waterfalls are more abundant on wet days. The icicles in winter
frost are spectacular. Seasonally heavy rain usually falls during the
months of October and November, this is known affectionately as the
"monsoon". Snow generally falls in the months of May through
to September.
