The
Auckland Domain is the city's oldest park and is an imposing crown of
green just minutes from the city center. The 75 hectares park has been
developed around the cone of an extinct volcano.
The most popular areas of the Auckland Domain for weddings include the Winter Gardens, Watson’s Bequest and the Band Rotunda. There are also extensive formal gardens, sweeping lawns, statuary and duck ponds.
The Winter Gardens are a unique part of the Auckland Domain being housed in two huge dome-roofed Victorian glasshouses joined by a courtyard containing a large pool with water lilies and lotus. The 'Tropical House', with its steamy, hot, 25-30° Celsius atmosphere, features giant palms, cycads, lush-petalled exotics and a heated pond with its Brazilian water lily, 'Victoria amazonica'.
The 'Cool House' contains masses of brightly coloured blooms containing an ever-changing display of seasonal blooms, an open courtyard and the Fernz fernery, an award-winning native garden that displays the many varieties of ferns that are found in New Zealand.
