Amidst this breathtaking alpine playground exist New Zealand’s highest mountains and largest glaciers. Aoraki Mt Cook National Parks boasts more than 140 peaks over 2000m (6500ft) including Mt Cook, the highest peak in Australasia. It is also a popular place to engage in a number of outdoor activities. Among them, walking, running, mountain biking, climbing, skiing and hunting.
Aoraki Mount Cook village lies within the park dwarfed by tche immensity of the surrounding landscape. The climate within the village is typical of a mountainous area. Temperatures can range from above 30 degree Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer (December to February) to below –10 degrees Celsius (12 degrees Fahrenheit) during the winter months (June to August). Snowfalls during the winter are not uncommon, and snow lies around the village for an average of 21 days every year.
